Tea For Soothing A Sore Throat

Tava Tea

It can be a first sign of a common cold, or something more serious (like a staph infection), but a sore throat is always a painful and uncomfortable condition.

Luckily, you don't have to wait for a sore throat to clear up on its own; there are many natural remedies and over-the-counter medications that can help alleviate the soreness.

Among the natural remedies for a sore throat, probably the most used are herbal teas. Small wonder: a nice cup of warm herbal tea can offer immediate soothing relief for the soreness in your throat.

Teas have different medicinal properties that can help with soothing the throat soreness.

Tea can help you fight the soreness indirectly, by strengthening your immune system, thanks to the abundance of nutrients it contains naturally: zinc, copper, iron, selenium, folate, and vitamins A, C, E and B6. Those varieties that are rich in antioxidants appear to have stronger anti-inflammatory properties, so drinking them can reduce throat swelling, and consequently the soreness. Finally, thanks to their analgesic properties, drinking teas can simply numb your throat - thus making your symptoms less painful.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, licorice root, eucalyptus, slippery elm, peppermint and marshmallow root may be effective in treating throat soreness.

Licorice root has a longstanding use in the traditional medicine as a sore throat remedy. Licorice root gargle was proven to prevent the occurrence of throat soreness. Naturally sweet tasting, it's a common ingredient in herbal teas for sore throat.

Slippery elm is often found in combination herbal teas for sore throat. The inner bark of the tree contains mucilage, a substance that soothes the mucus membranes in the throat, and thus reduces the feeling of irritation and soreness.

Marshmallow root also contains mucilage. Marshmallow root tea is recommended by many herbalists as a remedy for sore throat.

Peppermint contains menthol, a substance that works as a decongestant (it relieves congestion) and expectorant (it promotes secretion).

Additionally, citrus fruit like lemon, lime and orange can help with removal of mucus, so try adding its juice to your tea. Many also recommend adding a spoonful of raw honey or a pinch of crushed ginger. Ginger is also believed to help your throat by thinning the mucus, and honey is known to be helpful against the persistent cough.

Whichever tea you decide to use as an alley in a fight against soreness, always remember to drink it warm - but not too warm. Too hot beverages could further irritate your throat - so give your tea a chance to cool a little.
